Cactus Wren

picture of a cactus wren

Cactus wrens are strictly a southern species, with a range extending from Southern California, east to the Lower Rio Grande Valley in Texas.

Their unique look makes them easy to distinguish from other wren species. They are medium sized birds that dress up the typical wren brown color with a dark spotted breast.

Like other wren species, the Cactus wren forages on the ground for insects and spiders. Unlike other wren species, they also eat seeds.

Cactus wrens are designated the state bird of Arizona.
