Bewick's Wren

picture of a bewick's wren

The Bewick's wren (Thryomanes bewickii) is a small brown bird easily recognizable by the white stripe above the eye.

They are cavity nesters that live in brushy areas around many residential areas. You will often see them walking slowly along the ground, scratching for insects and spiders.

Come the start of breeding season, male territorial behavior picks up. They begin perching on branches and singing.

Bewick's werns are adaptable birds, with many considered full time residents in their West Coast range. In the south they tend to migrate longer distances to their northern breeding grounds.
