Male Northern Flicker

Types of Birds Home

male northern flicker

The Red-shafted Northern Flicker (Colaptes auratus) is the West Coast version of the Northern Flicker. East cost flickers have yellow colored feathers under the wings.

They are ground feeding birds that prefer open habitats such as fields, rather than dense forests. Their diet consists of insects, seeds and berries.

The male is distinguished from the female by the red patch on the cheek.
