Gilded Flicker

Types of Birds Home

male gilded flicker

The Gilded Flicker is one of three commonly found flicker subspecies in the United States. They are cavity nesters, not too picky about the trees they use, as long as the trees or wood objects are weakened or decayed. Flickers are commonly called the ground eaters of the woodpecker family. You often see them hopping along the ground looking for ants and other insects. They also are not too picky about food, and will visit back yard feeders for suet, larger seeds and many types of berry trees/bushes.

The Gilded Flicker is the Southwest version of the bird. Like the Red-shafted Northern Flicker, the male wears a red mustache. Like the Yellow-shafted Flicker, it has yellow underbars. The picture above also shows the black patch on the top of the chest.
