female downy woodpecker

The femaly Downy Woodpecker (Picoides pubescens) is a small woodpecker that is very common around the United States.

Oak trees are among their favorite haunts. However, in a pinch they are not picky and will hang out in poplar trees, filbert trees and other nut bearing trees.

Absent nut trees, they will also hang out in your yard if you put up peanut butter or suet.
