acorn woodpecker

The Acorn woodpecker (Melanerpes formicivorus) is a West Coast member of the woodpecker family.

As a species, their motto could be interpreted as never put off until tomorrow what can be done today. They live in colonies among oak groves and literally spend their days gathering acorns. Once gathered, they place them into tree holes or any nearby wood structure such as fences and telephone poles.

Unlike most woodpecker species, both the male and female have a red crown. The picture here is of a male. The females have a black patch between the red crown and white face.
