Desert Lupine

picture of some desert lupine flowers

A few different lupines go by the name of Desert Lupine, and some of these species are found throughout the Rocky Mountain and Pacific Coast states.

Lupinus sparsiflorus, like all the lupines, is a member of the Pea Family (Fabaceae). It goes by a variety of common names such as Coulter's Lupine, Mojave Lupine, Loose-flowered Lupine and Desert Lupine.

This particular species is native to the desert Southwest, and blooms with pretty purple with yellow shaded flowers.

Lupine species are generally not recommended for human consumption. Some species are toxic. Many lupine species, to the contrary, make excellent butterfly nectar plants.
