It is a member of the sunflower family (Asteraceae) but belongs to a different genus than the more common, and non-native, blue chicory flower called Cichorium intybus.
Both Chicory flowers have a long history of use as a hot drink additive. The root of desert chicory is often used as an ingredient in herbal tea.
A yellow base contrasts with the plant's white, typical aster-like petals.
Desert Chicory flowers are likewise edible, and can be tossed on salads or other foods as garnish.
