Purple Deadnettle

picture of a purple deadnettle flower

Purple Deadnettle (Lamium purpureum) is a small plant in the mint family (Lamiaceae) introduced to the United States from Europe. They also go by the name red deadnettle.

Now commonly found across the United States, it is sometimes labeled a weed, sometimes labeled a wildflower.

Like the Birdseye Speedwell, it falls into the category of very small flowers, no larger than one-half inch in diameter.

The picture at the top of the page shows an enlarged version of the plant, with its characteristic hairs on the leaves and the petals.

The small pink trumpet-shaped flowers are marked with darker spots.

The picture on the left shows the diminutive flower size in relation to the plant leaves.

Chia is an example of an indigineous plant in the mint family, with a darker puprle color flower.
