Birdseye Speedwell

picture of a birdseye speedwell flower

Birdseye Speedwell (Veronica persica), has a very small flower (less than 1/2" in diameter) and it is found throughout the world.

It is a member of the figwort family (Schrophulariaceae) and quite an adaptable plant. Most botonical histories of the plant trace its movement from East Asia to Europe in the early nineteenth century. It spread to grasslands throughout much of the Continent, carrying the name, common field speedwell.

The plant is readily adaptable, with seeds found in soil amenable to a variety of grasses. It has since been introduced to the United States, where it is found in yards and fields from coast to coast.

Often the plant is labeled a weed. It also produces nice looking blue flowers, and across the internet there are instances of its also having a wildlfower label.
