pied-billed grebe

The Pied-billed Grebe is among the most common of the Grebes in the United States.

It is rather nondescript brown color. The black ring around the bill during the breeding season is an identifying characteristic.

Pied-billed Grebes prefer freshwater habitats like ponds and marshes. Their diet consists of insects, small fish and other small aquatic organisms. They are good swimmers who dive under the water to find food or move away from humans in their presence.
