Polistes instabilis is a neotropical paper wasp that is occasionally found in the Lower Rio Grande Valley (LRGV) of Texas.

Polistes exclamans is a similar looking species that is widely spread throughout the Midwest and some Atlantic Coastal states.

This picture was taken at the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge in the LRVG, and the color pattern of the body matches P. instabilis better than it matches the color pattern of P. exclamans.
