Myzinum

picture of a Tiphiid wasp in the myzinum genus

Tipiid wasps (family Tiphiidae) are parasitic solitary wasps that prey on beetle larvae as food for their young.

Like the velvet ants, some female species are wingless.

Myzinum wasps are the sole species in the sole genus of the Subfamily Myzininae of the Tiphiid Wasp family. With the exception of the Pacific Northwest and Northern Rockies, their range extends around the United States.

Males, like the one pictured above, are typically thinner than females, with a hook on the bottom of the abdomen. Like most male wasp species, they do not sting.
