Bombus melanopygus edwardsii provides a good example of the problems associated with bumblebee identification.

It is a subspecies of the Red-tailed Bumblebee, a western species, that does not have a red tail.

The picture shows the white facial hairs along with a black, white, black, white, black, white pattern on the body (starting from the bottom of the abdomen to the top of the head).
