Common Eastern Bumblebee

picture of a bumblebee species, bombus impatiens

Small in size, the Common Eastern Bumblebee (bombus impatiens) can be found in gardens and fields in many areas west of the Rocky Mountains.

The hairy black abdomen (partially shown in the picture) and the hairy yellow thorax with black spot in the middle represent the best field identification clues.

The Eastern Carpenter Bee shares the ID clues, however it is generally larger and the abdomen is hairless.

Their wide range is a good indication of a varied diet and the Common Eastern Bumblebee is a popular commercially raised species for pollinating crops such as Maine Blueberries and hothouse tomatoes.
