Cerceris bicornuta

picture of Cerceris bicornuta, a wasp in the Family Crabronidae

Crabronidae are a large family of parasitic, solitary wasps, with close to nine thousand documented species world wide.

Most people associate the family with the sand wasps, a large subfamily, often with colorful eyes, seen living around the sandy edges of water areas.

Crabronidae feed their young a variety of insects within their territory.

The brown eyes and brown body of Cerceris bicornuta, a Southeast species, serve as a good identification starting point.
