Bembix Wasps

picture of a bembix waspwasp

Bembix are a genus of Crabroninae wasps found in most of the United States with a habitat that includes sandy soils, where they build their nests.

While they are classified as solitary wasps, it is not uncommon to see a large number of them build their nests close together.

They are also predatory wasps that feed their larvae a variety of fly species.

The top picture shows an above average sized species with a black abdomen and white eyes. The bottom of the abdomen shows a white stripe pattern. Other species are more easily recognized by stripes on the top of the abdomen, along with green eyes.

There is little need to fear being stung by a bembix species because they invest their energy in nectaring and capturing prey.
