Atanycolus

picture of a brachnoid wasp in the atanycolus genus

A black thorax and red abdomen characterize so many wasp species that identifying any one species can be problematic.

The picture shows a Brachnoid wasp in the Atanycolus genus. It is enlarged by a factor of four to highlight its details.

In nature, the wasp is very small and thin, with long legs and an antennae. Even with the antennae and legs, its small size makes it easily overlooked on the flower petals.
