Red-eared Slider

picture of a red-eared slider

Most people recognize the Red-eared Slider (Trachemys scripta elegans) on sight as the turtle with the red patches behind the ear.

They are popular pets that have been introduced into fresh water ponds and lakes around the country. In some instances they are considered invasive because of their ability to aggressively colonize an area, removing native turtle species.

They can grow up to a foot long and subsist on a diet of local animal and plant life.
