Burmese Brown Tortoises (M. e. phayrei) are the largest tortoises in Asia.

Contrary to popular thinking about tortoises as the dry land family of turtles, these tortoises are well known for lying in shallow ponds and streams during hot days.

They are considered vunerable in the wild. They are popular pets and found in many zoos.
