American Robin

The American Robin (Turdus migratorius) is the largest and most common member of the Turidae family, found practically everywhere in the United States, with the exception of Hawaii.

Early bird is an appropriate moniker for the Robin because it is a year round resident in some areas. In areas where it is a non-resident, it is among the first birds appearing in spring. Robins are also one of the first birds seen in the morning, walking along the grass, looking for worms.

Their ease blending into residential areas makes them popular birds. Connecticut, Michigan and Wisconsin have designated the American Robin the official state bird.

During the winter season, Robins are known to gather in large flocks, sometimes reaching populations of 100,000 or more, in areas that provide adequate food, shelter and water.
