Morpho Butterfies

picture of a morpho butterfly

Morpho butterflies are a family of large, New World butterflies native to the tropical areas of Mexico to the northern part of South America.

Many species in the family have blue wings, much like the blue butterflies in the United States. Unlike the small blue butterflies common throughout the United States, many of the morphos are large, making them a popular attraction at butterfly exhibits.

Contrary to most butterfly species that sip nectar from flowers, morphos are known to drink nectar from fruit.

The picture shows a morpho with its wings folded. The eye spots on the wings are also characteristic of the species, and they serve as a defensive mechanism while the butterfly is at rest.
