It is not the easiest skipper to identify, with males and females having different looks, each similar to other skipper species in their range.
The top picture shows a Sachem male. The lack of white patches on wings and the brown body differentiate it from a similar Western species, the Woodland skipper.
Top and bottom views of the wings for both the male and female would be the advisable way to accurately identify the species.
The caterpillars feed on a variety of grasses, accounting for their continental range.
