Juba Skipper

picture of a Juba skipper

The Juba Skipper (Hesperia juba), sometimes called the Yuba skipper, makes it home throughout the Western United States.

The white face, green hair and light (or white) spotted pattern on the underside of the wings serve as good, first step field identification clues.

A top view of the wings shows a typical orangish skipper color. The forewing has a wide, dark, jagged border (see bottom picture).

Regional differences in the Juba Skipper, along with its physical similarity to a few other Hesperia skippers, the Western Branded Skipper, for example, commonly causes identification confusion.

Having a variety of top and side view pictures of any physically similar Hesperia species always helps with identification.

The caterpillars feed on a variety of grasses, accounting for their broad range.
