Common Sootywing

picture of a Common Sootywing butterfly

The Common Sootywing (Pholisora catullus) is one of two Pholisora species found in the United States, and it can be found from coast to coast.

Like its relative the Mexican Sootywing, it is defined by very dark, to black, wings. The few white spots on the top wing are a good field identification clue.

The picture shows a side view of the Common Sootywing's white face with a black stripe. A top view would also show some white dots on the top of the head.

The are on the small side, and with the wings closed, they might be mistaken for a grass skipper.
