The little swirl of white, or light spots, on the otherwise brown wings helps with field identification. The top sides of the wings are generally darker, with more pronounced white spots.
When accompanied by the butterfly experts at the Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park, specie's identification becomes a great deal easier.
The park encompasses a smaller acreage of land than the nearby Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge. However, it offers a very nice variety of nature trails, along with educational programs, for viewing and learning about the region's unique fauna and flora.
