Verrucosa

picture of an Arrowhead spider

The Arrowhead Spider (Verrucosa arenata) the sole representative of the Verrucosa genus in the United States, inhabits the forests and fields of the Eastern United States.

It's a small and colorful species with a red head and yellow abdomen. The picture shows a specimen enlarged by a factor of three to highlight the pattern on the abdomen.

Unlike other orb weaving spiders, the picture also shows it resting on its web with its head pointed upward. Most other orb weavers rest head down.
