Huntsman Spider

picture of a huntsman spider

The Huntsman Spider (Heteropoda venatoria) is a member of the Family Sparassidae, also known as Giant Crab Spiders.

While they do not grow as big as turnip trucks, they can measure around four inches, including the legs, and scare many a person in the process.

Three different Sparrassidae species can be found in southern regions of the United States. Heteropoda venatoria, in the top picture, is a very common species found in tropical areas around the world.

It was introduced to Florida and has a strong presence in residential areas. It can also be found throughout the Hawaiian Islands. Despite the size, many people consider them welcome guests because of their appetite for other pesky insects such as cockroaches.
