Chilean Rose Tarantula

picture of a Chilean Rose Tarantula

The Chilean rose tarantula (Grammostola rosea), also called a Rose-haired tarantula, are native spiders of the northern desert region of Chile and a bit west to Argentina.

Their docility makes them popular animals in the pet trade. While they are not known to be aggressive biters, it should be noted that their hairs become easily detached as a defense mechanism. Persons handling them with bare hands should avoid putting their hands near their face, as it could lead to loose tarantula hairs to become embedded in their eyes.

Tarantulas in the Grammostola genus are fairly common throughout South America, with over a dozen species living in both desert and tropical forested areas.
