Ring-necked Snake

picture of a ring-necked snake face and neck

Ring-necked snakes (Diadophis punctatus) are a common group of snakes found around the United States.

Most, if not all species, are easily identified by the dual color bodies, dark on the top and a bright shade of orange or yellow on the bottom.

The top picture is a close-up that shows the characteristic ring around the neck. The bottom picture shows the snake's dual colors.

They are non-poisonous snakes and often easily approached. However, touching them is not recommended, as they can secret a foul smelling chemical.
