Types of Sandpipers

Sandpipers are commonly the smallest shorebirds found on mud flats and coastal shores. (The Willet picture provides a nice size contrast among shorebirds.)

Most shorebirds, including sandpipers, have seasonal feathers. Identification during non-breeding season is complicated a bit because most sandpipers have brown top feathers with a white, cream or buff underside.

Feather colors become more distinct during breeding season, making field identificaation a bit easier. Here's hoping these pictures and descriptions will help with the identification process.
