Townsend's Chipmunk

picture of a townsend's chipmunk

Chipmunks are a genus (Tamias) of mammals in the squirrel family easily recognized by their facial stripes.

Their practice of building underground dens puts them in the same subfamily as ground squirrels and prairie dogs.

The Townsend's Chipmunk (Tamias townsendii) is a resident of coniferous forests in the Pacific Northwest. They are typically found at different elevations West of the Cascades.
