California Ground Squirrel

picture of a pair of California gournd squirrels

The California Ground Squirrel is a common resident of fields and forests of the West Coast through northern Oregon.

Recently a small population has crossed the Columbia river and established itself in southern Washington state.

They are ground dwelling rodents that live in burrows. Most of their day time is spent foraging for food and sunning. You can often see them posing on rocks and tree stumps.

The picture shows them to be short haired with a mixture of gray and brown fur.
