Pink Flowering Currant (Ribes sanguineum glutinosum)

picture of Pink Flowering Currant flowers and leaves (Ribes sanguineum glutinosum)

Pink-flowering currant (Ribes sanguineum glutinosum) is one of four different West Coast varieties of Ribes sanguineum.

The Red-flowering currant is the more common plant, found along the entire West Coast, north through Canada. Pink-flowering currant's range is limited to coastal areas from central California, north to central Oregon.

It's a shade friendly plant, which makes it amenable to the typical shady Redwood habitat.

Photographing the flora and fauna in the shady Redwoods environment presents its own challenges. The top picture of the plant's flowers and leaves was taken with the flash and exposure set low. On editing, brightness was reduced approximately ten percent to create the black background.

The small pink flowers bloom in clusters early in the spring, making it, like the Red-flowering currant, a favorite hummingbird flower. The berries also attract other native birds.
