The Screech Owls are a group of Strigidae, named for their vocalization patterns, which do not follow the traditional hoo or hoot of other Strigidae species.

Three species can be found in the United States: Eastern Screech-Owl (Megascops asio); Western Screech-Owl (Megascops kennicottii); and Whiskered Screech-Owl (Megascops trichopsis).

They are on the small side for owls, measuring about eight to nine inches in height.
