Osprey

picture of an osprey

Ospreys are unique birds of prey. The only species in the Pandionidae family.

The species evolved physical traits enabling it to survive on a diet consisting solely of fish.

Like all raptors, they possess keen eyesight and strong flying ability. They also have sharp talons on their feet. When they glide above a water body, they spot a fish and then dive to grab it with their feet.

The osprey in the picture was lunching on fish when it noticed me trying to take a picture.

They are migratory birds that nest on high platforms around water sources in the northern latitudes of the Eastern, Midwest and Western United States.
