Gyrfalcon

picture of a gyrfalcon

The world's largest falcon, the Gyrfalcon (Falco rusticolus), lives and breeds in the Arctic and sub-Arctic areas of North America, including coastal regions of Alaska.

They winter as far south as the norther tier of the continental United States.

Their feathers tend to change color to help them blend into their environment. Species that live in the snowy Arctic regions have whiter feathers.

Their diet consists mostly of other birds within their territory.
