Most people's familiarity with lemurs comes from viewing the Ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta) at the local zoo or wildlife park.
They are probably the most populous lemur in captivity, and they are also kept as pets in their native Madagascar.
In the wild they inhabit dry forests of Southwestern Madagascar. While all lemurs are arboreal animals, the Ring-tailed Lemur tends to spend a good deal of time on the ground.
