Proboscis Monkey

They are natives of Borneo, and the only representative of the Nasalis genus in the Old World Monkey family (Cercopithecidae).
Their habitat consists of a variety of forest areas, all near water and their diet consists primarily of fruit and foliage.
Deforestation continues to place pressure on the population and the IUCN lists them as endangered.
Recent research on the Status and Conservation of Proboscis Monkeys explains the social structure as:
"flexible social structure with one male multi-female groups as the basic social unit, peripheral males sometimes forming all-male groups"
The research notes that while the aggregate population in the study area is comparatively high, their territory is highly fragmented, necessitating help for isolated groups, perhaps by building habitat corridors.
