Night Monkeys

New World Monkeys are generally characterized as diurnal, or active during the day. Night Monkeys (family Aotidae) buck the trend, being the only nocturnal monkeys that inhabit Central and South American forests.
The top picture highlights some of their shared physical characteristics, mostly the round face and large eyes. Along with the fur patter on the face, the physical traits and propensity for night time activity serve as the basis for another nickname, the owl monkey.
Field studies on any nocturnal animal can be problematic, night monkeys are no exception to the rule. Recent research suggests that, unlike the vast majority of primate species, they live in small family groups, with a single female and male that share parental responsibilities.
Fruit appears to be their food of choice, although researchers speculate that their diet is also supplemented by plant material.
The IUCN lists eleven different species, none of which is classified as endangered.
