Howler Monkeys

picture of a Red Howler Monkey

Fourteen different Howler Monkey species (genus Alouatta) inhabit the forested areas of Mexico, Central America and South America.

Second only to the Blue Whale in vocal ability, the howler monkey is recognized as the loudest land mammal to inhabit planet earth.

They use their vocal abilities to mark their territory and gain some understanding of nearby howler monkey populations.

Most of their time is spent in the forest canopy searching for food. Their diet is varied, but consists, in order of priority, young leaves, fruits, and flowers.

Two species, the Maranhao Red-handed Howler Monkey (Alouatta ululata) and the Yucatan Black Howler Monkey (Alouatta pigra) are listed as endangered. Hunting and deforestation are cited as their primary threats.
