Africa's five baboon species all inhabit different geographic regions of the continent, with the Chacma Baboon (Papio ursinus) the native Southern Africa species.
Chacma society is built on female philopatry, with males immigrating to a group and competing for the privileges of rank, including access to fertile females. Single male groups have also been recorded.
They are omnivores, with a diet consisting of local plant and animal matter, whichever source is most available and convenient to gather.
Their extended range leads to a fairly stable population.
