Black and White Ruffed Lemur

picture of a Black and White Ruffed Lemur

Along with the Red-ruffed Lemur, the Black and White Ruffed Lemur (Varecia variegata) represent the Varecia genus.

Compared to other lemur species, both Varecia have the largest bodies, and longest fur, especially the long ruff of fur around the head.

Their principle habitat, the eastern tropical forests, provide enough fruit to suit most of their dietary needs. They are also known to consume leaves, flowers and the occasional insect.

The IUCN lists them as critically endangered, and there are some captive breeding programs attempting to reintroduce them into the wild.
