The Black and White Colombus Monkey (colobus-guereza), inhabit a variety of forest areas across Central Africa, from coast to coast.
It's a fairly large species' group with eight separate subspecies identified.
The picture highlights the guereaz's striking black and white face. Early Western explorers often noted its appearance.
The 1848 volume, The book of travels in Africa: from the earliest ages to the present time describes it as, "Another singular animal of the monkey tribe is the Colobus Guereza, with the head, face, neck, back, limbs, and basal half of the tail, covered with short black hair;
the temples, chin, throat, and a band over the eyes, white; the sides, flanks from the shoulders downward, loins, clothed with long flowing white, which hangs down on each side like a loose garment; the tail tufted with dirty white.
Even today the guereza is hunted for its fur.
Their diet consists of both plant life and fruit.
