Field Burning

picture of field burning

Field burning, long considered a quick and easy way to rid an area of debris, is coming under increased scrutiny, especially in agriculture.

Farmers often defend the practice as a practical way to manage the remains of the past year's crops, while at the same time preparing the field for nest year's crops. Weed and pest control, reduced soil erosion are cited as some of field burning's benefits.

At the same time, field burning always contributes to adjacent and down wind air quality problems.
