picture of a white pine cone

White Pine refers to a group of large growing pine trees characterized by needles growing in groups of five.

The Eastern White-Pine is the tallest growing tree on the East Coast and the Sugar Pine, a related West Coast white pine, is the tallest growing pine tree in the world.

White Pines also produce the largest pine cones in the world. The Sugar Pine can produce cones reaching two feet in length.

The top picture shows a foot long cone from the Western White Pine (Pinus monticola), the state tree of Idaho.
