The picture shows a distinct characteristic of the cone. It can grow on the bottom of a large tree limb, as well as the smaller branches typically associated with pine cone formation and growth.
The picture also shows another cone anamoly. Typically the Knobcone Pine is known for its closed cone, only opening and spreading its seeds following a fire.
