Knobcone Pine Cone

picture of a knobcone pine cone

The Knobcone Pine (Pinus attenuata) has a very limited range, growing in areas around the Northern California and Southern Oregon coastal regions west of the Cascades and Sierra Nevada mountains.

The picture shows a distinct characteristic of the cone. It can grow on the bottom of a large tree limb, as well as the smaller branches typically associated with pine cone formation and growth.

The picture also shows another cone anamoly. Typically the Knobcone Pine is known for its closed cone, only opening and spreading its seeds following a fire.
