Incense Cedar Cone

picture of an incense cedar cone

Contrary to the name, the Incense Cedar (Libocedrus decurrens) is a large coniferous tree belonging to the cypress tree family (Cupressaceae).

A couple dozen different native cypress species grow in the United States, and the Incense Cedar is a West Coast species known primarily for its use as wood for pencils.

Many cypress species share similar features, and the Incense Cedar cone, with its flat, bill-shaped sides, serves as a good tree identification clue.
