Giant Sequoia Cone

picture of a giant sequoia cone

Like the acorn, the cone of the Giant Sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) serves as a reminder that some of the biggest things in the world come in small packages.

In terms of size, the Giant Sequoia ranks as the largest tree (by mass) in the world.

The cone, with its typical smiling or frowning appearance (depending on which way it is held, often measures around the three inch range.

The largest stands of the giant Giant Sequoias are found in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California. Smaller groups of smaller trees can be found throughout the Pacific Northwest.

They are members of the Cypress family of trees.
