Townsend's Warbler

townsend's warbler

The Townsend's Warbler is almost exclusively a West Coast bird. In terms of looks, it is one striking bird.

They are characteristically yellow in the face and breast, with black patches or stripes on the head and face. The male has a black throat.

They are primarily insect eaters. Many accounts of their feeding habits have them high in trees. However, they also will walk along the ground and grass scavaging for a nice meal.

The bird is named for John Kirk Townsend, a Philadelphia born naturalist. Along with a large party, he traveled the United States west in the mid-nineteenth century documenting wildlife, including bird species.
